How have your political views changed over time?

I’m an elected Green Party councillor. The environment and how we love in the world and get on as an inclusive community matters to me.

My politics have however taken several decades to mature. Four decades ago I canvassed around St.John’s Wood for the Conservatives. That said, I joined Young Labour or whatever it was called at University – and attended exactly one meeting where Ken Loach was the speaker.

My active engagement with local politics started in the mid-1990s helping with a campaign to do something about traffic speeding through the village of Long Compton. A decade later living in Seaford I was coopted to the Town council because of my successful activism on bin collections and recycling. A decade on I re-engage at general elections as a Liberal-Democrat though living in Lewes by then and disillusioned with the Lib-Dems i joined the Greens. This time I was actively persuaded to stand for an election. This was 2019.

I attend national, regional and local events while keeping my nose close to the ground, literally. What matters locally are potholes, litter, parking, housing and trees.

  1. I have found myself floating between LDs and Tory. But wanted to share with you the experience of a late dear friend ‘Bob’

He started his political career as a LD counsellor and was indeed a popular member of the Town Council. However he found himself increasingly as odds with the leadership and so for a couple of terms stood as an independent; his character ensuring he was reelected.

Over time it become increasing difficult to fight a seat without some sort of back-up and so ‘Bob’ joined the Conservatives and was duly elected; such that he completed a term as Town Mayor.

In all that time I don’t think his basic political beliefs changed a great deal; that of the parties did!

All the best for 2024 and do please keep blogging
